I am impressed and apprecite for the study!

Nalasi, Mchoteka and Lukumbule are Areas wiht frequent man-eating lions attacking people injuring, killing and in several occassions eating.

Misechela just at the cetre of Muhuwesi Forest reserve which harbours such man-eating animals as lions, leopards, etc but have rarely incidences of those attacking people. Misechela and particularly Lukumbule are not too far. There needs a research ta establish what is happening in misechela that can be done in parts of Tunduru to lower the danger they are facing!

This is less of a comment and more of a question of contacting the right person/s. I am doing research on the Lions of Rovuma in Tanzania on the topic of man-predation. Could someone please contact me so that we can have an email/telephone conversation. I am based in Cape Town. Thank you for your time.
Dear

On this website I saw you do good works for nature and wildlife in Tanzania. I am very interested in African culture, wildlife, ecology and forestry.

My name is Dieter Aneca, 24 years old. A few months ago I finished my education here in Belgium. I have done two formations. First I studied Environmental Management for three years. After this three years I started another formation, namely Landscape Development. In this four years I learnt a lot about the environmental interactions, pollution, ecology, green energy, biodiversity, foresty, landscapes, et.

In the future (in about 6 months) I am planning to come to Tanzania. I know some people there who I want to visit. I will be in your beautiful country for a few months. While I'm there I would like to do some work. Your workingfield interests me very much.

I was wondering if you are interested in a Belgian voluteer who can help you with your work for a few weeks or months. I have a good knowledge of environment and nature. I had lessons for a whole year in foresty, ecology, landscapes, Arc GIS on computer, environment legislation,... I also worked here in Belgium for a few months in the Regional Landscape the Flemish Ardennes (http://www.rlva.be). This is an organisation which strives for the conservation, development and reinforcement of nature and ecology in the Flemish Ardennes (this is a region in Belgium). The experiences and knowledge that I have can possibly help you.

Maybe you can tell me what you think about my offer. This is only a very first step. Don't hesitate to ask me all your questions, I will be happy to answer them all. I really hope you mail me back, also if you are not interested. My email address is dieter_aneca@hotmail.com.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards

FYI...this from a friend in Germany...

The Guardian -18 April
 [1]http://www.ippmedia.com/ipp/regional_roundup/index.html
 RUVUMA
Marauding man-eater lions have disrupted economic activities and
caused apprehension among residents of Tunduru District in Ruvuma
region, reports Augustine Chindiye of PST, Tunduru
However, the wildlife authorities in the area have expressed dismay
after learning that the residents were not willing to cooperate to
 resolve the dilemma.
Tunduru Wildlife Officer, Dickson Koishwa informed PST that his office
learnt about lack of enthusiasm among the residents when game officers
deployed from his office were given a cold welcome at Mchoteka village
while searching for a lion that had previously killed a villager,
 Hashim Said, (18).
Koishwa said his entire office was disturbed by reports on continued
loss of people`s lives and domestic animals eaten by lions.
``The most recent incident reported in our office is the killing of a
young man in the village identified as Hashim that took place last
 Saturday.
His body was discovered by villagers with some parts missing obviously
eaten by a lion,`` Koishwa explained.
He said the Wildlife Department responded to the soonest and deployed
armed officers to work closely with the villagers to chase the lions.
However, the officers were in for a surprise.
``Lines of attack proposed by game officers to help get rid of the
prowling lions from going around villages where they had been spotted
 ended up in frustrations.
Villagers refused to cooperate complicating all efforts to end the
 standoff,`` he lamented.
Clarifying on the seriousness of the problem, Koishwa said at least
one person, goat or cattle are eaten everyday in Tunduru district,
adding some of the incidents were not officially reported.
He named notorious places with lions continued wrecking havoc as
Matemanga, Maji Maji, Nakapanya and Nalasi (60km radius around
Tunduru). ``So far five cattle and 23 goats have been killed in Maji
Maji area, since early March this year.? the officer explained.
Again the officers seemed to be surprised by the ferocious nature of
the lions which they had never witnessed before. ``They kill ducks,
chicken, cats, tearing apart mattresses and clothes once raid a house
and missed the targeted prey,`` said one of the officer.

Hello...Read with interest your Tunduru travels. I was in Lindi about the same time traveling with zoologists studying man-eating prides. I would greatly appreciate any updates you may have later as I am cnsidering writing a second book about man-eating behavior in Africa. All the best, Bob Frump

Thanks for the question, Don. Yes, our village meetings were quite extensive and covered such topics as the cultural implications of lion attacks, local methods of retaliation and extensive accounts of the circumstances leading to attacks. For example, in addition to attacks in the fields, we also learned that people are sometimes taken from their homes at night, when the lions find a way of breaking into a household.

A significant part of each village discussion also centered around current strategies to deal with lions once they have attacked a human. For example, we learned, in many cases, that village reports of attacks made their way to the district headquarters far too slowly. And, in turn, with too few wildlife rangers and limited resources, government responses were often delayed as well.

We are continuing to work through the numerous records and accounts of attacks that we collected on our trip with the hopes of developing a more detailed understanding of the factors contributing to these terrible attacks. Please stay tuned!
